About

Adventures in Writing Camp includes activities such as writing and publishing eBooks, creating podcasts, blogs, and animatics, and using iPads to create stories. Rising first graders develop storytelling skills, campers entering grades 2–5 write and publish their own eBooks, and campers entering grades 6–8 create their own projects such as podcasts, blogs, or animatics about topics they choose. Camp days also include music and dance, improv games and skits, learning games borrowed from improv theater, and writing chant and rap lyrics for good-natured chant and rap battles with other camp sessions.

• Ages: 6–13 years old

Writing lessons at Adventures in Writing Camp are taught by energetic, innovative, and credentialed teachers, and each session is taught by a team of credentialed, local elementary and middle school teachers. The camp describes its curriculum as engaging, active, and turned into professionally produced pop songs, with instruction delivered through music, games, videos, and technology. The program states that it works to create a virtuous cycle of enthusiasm toward writing, noting that when a child becomes a more skilled and confident writer, it opens the door to success in all aspects of school and life. Adventures in Writing Camp was created by Stanford-educated authors Hans and Jen Hartvickson in partnership with Doctor Alison DeMark and teacher Jonny D. Williams.

The camp notes a student-to-staff ratio of not more than seven-to-one, and states that each session is taught by credentialed local teachers who go through a thorough screening and interview process, extensive background checks, and significant training on camp culture and curriculum. Counselors are all college students, including teachers-in-training and drama students, and teachers are only required to commit for two weeks. The program describes an active schedule, fun traditions, convenient hours with supervised play available when needed, a worry-free cancellation policy, easy check-in and out, and that it is described as summer camp, not summer school.

Parent testimonials report that campers have been excited about their books and other projects, eager to attend each day, and interested in returning the following summer. One parent of a first grade boy described that he never complained about going, enjoyed camp, and was excited about his book, while another parent shared that their children loved all aspects of the program and were very excited to show their work. A parent of a fourth grade boy stated that it was the first camp he really enjoyed, that he was proud of his book and the books of fellow campers, and that his enthusiasm made his sibling wish to attend as well.
