Camp Gan Shalom
Pasadena and Pomona, 114 W Lime Ave, Suite A, Monrovia, CA 91016
About
Camp Gan Shalom includes competitive sports, arts and crafts, cooking, games, and team-building exercises. Campers take weekly field trips to places like water parks, beaches, and state parks, and the program features special Friday theme days. Older participants also spend time creating and implementing programming for younger campers.
• Ages: 5–16 years old
• Schedule: Five days per week for eight one-week sessions
• Price: $125 per week
The program meets for eight one-week sessions, with regular camp hours from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and before- and after-camp care available. Six of the sessions take place in Pasadena and two in Pomona. Camp Gan Shalom includes three tracks: Kehillah (K–5th) for children entering Kindergarten through 5th grade, Manheegim (6th–8th) for campers entering 6th through 8th grade, and a Counselor-In-Training (CIT) program for campers entering 9th through 10th grade.
The Kehillah program focuses on building a robust Jewish community through old-fashioned camp activities in a healthy and safe environment. The Manheegim program offers older campers an opportunity to develop as young leaders, and, each day except Friday, participants go on a field trip to a new location, event, or program, depending on public health regulations and guidelines in effect. In the CIT program, participants assist counselors in running programs and activities for Kehillah campers and learn experientially about leadership development, communication skills, child development knowledge, lesson planning, teamwork, and conflict resolution, and they receive a certificate of volunteer hours for their time working with younger campers.
Camp Gan Shalom is led by Camp Gan Shalom Director Annabella Villegas Tornek. The program is part of the Jewish Federation of the Greater San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys, whose mission is to strengthen and enhance the community by promoting and advocating for Jewish values and Jewish life in the greater San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys. Financial assistance is available, and all families, including those requesting scholarship consideration or impacted by the Eaton Fire, register online and can select “Request a Scholarship Application” at the end of the form. The organization notes that research consistently demonstrates that attending Jewish summer camp is one of the most impactful and transformative experiences for fostering a strong Jewish identity in children, and that summer camp enhances a child's sense of identity, self-worth, and self-esteem while also cultivating leadership skills. The program states that working at camp is described as rewarding, meaningful, and fun, and that capacity has been reached for the 2026 CIT session. Families and community members can support participation by donating to the Jewish Federation’s Youth Fund to send a child to camp.
