About
Napa BMX League offers a five-week, five-session experience that combines BMX Racing instruction, sport-specific drills, and racing. Riders practice learning proper lines through the turns, the fastest and safest ways to navigate the jumps, and gaining comfort riding in close proximity to others, then complete three laps of competition in age-appropriate classes during each session. The program is a beginners-only program and event, and is not open to USA BMX Novices who participate in Open Racing.
• Ages: 3–18 years old
• Schedule: Five-week sessions with time slot choices of 9:15AM–11:30AM or 12:15PM–2:30PM, with additional Saturday and seasonal options across spring, early summer, late summer, and fall
• Price: The $159 tuition includes a riding jersey, personalized number/name plate, season-end award, and loaner bike/helmet if needed; parent/grandparent riders pay $109
The program is led by Napa resident and Olympic Medalist Donny Robinson, with Head Instructors and Jr. Coaches who are all past program graduates. Groups have a 65-rider limit, and each session begins with a brief group talk covering topics such as overcoming adversity and attitudes. Points racers collect each lap go toward a trophy presented on their final day, and sessions postponed due to weather, air quality, or acts of God are made up at a later date. The program defines a “Beginner” as any new participant or returning member who has not moved into Open Racing as a Novice, and riders can repeat the program as many times as needed.
Families are asked to bring the rider, pants, closed-toe shoes, and a long-sleeve shirt, and a BMX jersey is provided. Families are encouraged to pack any pedal bicycle and helmet they already own, but various sizes of loaner bikes and helmets are available at no extra charge for typical 3–4 year olds up to adults. Participants should be able to ride a pedal bike without training wheels and handle the small dirt obstacles, and no special racing helmet or bike is required; big-box bicycles, shocks, baskets or streamers, and half-shell lids are all approved. Girls and boys 3–15 years of age take part in instruction and racing in equal parts during each session, and parents, grandparents, or other adults of enrolled riders can also ride, learning alongside the kids and then competing separately with other adults while receiving the same included items at a lower enrollment fee.
The program offers a free “Give-it-a-Try” event and a free Open House that is a beginners-only experience for kids 3–15 years of age and adventurous parents and grandparents. North Bay BMX’s free Community Ride events on Saturdays are also mentioned as part of the broader BMX activity options, and the program notes that it often has three generations present cheering on their rider.
