About
Reel Stories offers activities in media production and leadership. The program is a nonprofit youth media organization focused on addressing the gender imbalance in film production.
Reel Stories was founded in 2013 and is led by Executive Director Esther Pearl. The program is powered by the Bay Area Video Coalition, a community hub for media makers. A unique feature of Reel Stories is that 100% of the films created are written, directed, produced, and edited by women and gender expansive individuals. Additionally, 50% of participants identify as people of color, and 40% receive financial aid.
Testimonials highlight the program's impact, such as Liz Tril's experience of using film to give a voice to underrepresented communities and Sarah Bryant-Cole's journey from attending Reel Stories to studying film at the Rhode Island School of Design. Vi Spencer, a student board member, appreciates the safe space Reel Stories creates for young women and non-binary people to express their ideas freely.
