Steve & Kate’s Camp was created in 1980. The Walnut Creek site lists Jake as the Director and notes Youngest Camper Support Staff dedicated specifically to supporting the youngest campers. The program’s mission states that, after a school year of rigid structure, summer at Steve & Kate’s gives kids freedom to choose which activities they do, whom they do them with, and for how long, and describes this experience as both pure joy and a training ground for being empowered, independent, resilient, and responsible for their own decisions. The camp notes that campers choose their activities and that the Mentorship Program, intended exclusively for children ages 14–15, utilizes self-directed learning and involves mentees helping facilitate camp activities, engaging with campers, and encouraging camper connection and participation.
The program offers all-inclusive rates that include all camp hours from 8:00am–6:00pm, snacks and lunch, and any activities that interest a child, along with long camp hours, included meals and snacks, and weekly specials such as giant inflatables, musical performances, movement workshops, or popup petting zoos. Families can buy any number of days and send their child to camp on any day they choose, drop off and pick up at any time during camp hours, and receive automatic full refunds for unused purchased Day Passes and partial refunds for underused Summer Passes, with automatic refunds for unused days at summer’s end. The Mentorship pricing listed above applies to this Mentorship Program.
As camp approaches, registered families receive an email with a link to a virtual camp orientation that covers local camp drop-off and pick-up procedures, how to check in and out each day, what to bring and not bring, and additional camp details. The host school, Seven Hills School, is ADA-accessible, and the camp invites families to learn more about the host school at https://www.sevenhillsschool.org/.
Testimonials about Steve & Kate’s Camp include comments from Andrew Stanton, Director of WALL-E, Finding Nemo, and Finding Dory, who says that children at Steve & Kate’s “blossom and discover a freedom of identity” and “find their thumbprint” there. Apple’s Hot News states, “If kids ruled the world, it might look something like Steve and Kate’s Camp.” Variety magazine notes that many children of people at Pixar and Industrial Light & Magic attend, and The Washington Post describes Steve & Kate’s Camp as blending a traditional camp experience with a modern, tech-savvy touch and a laid-back aura with Silicon Valley-inspired approaches to programming and payment. The Chicago Tribune states that “working parents’ worries dissipate as they contemplate Steve & Kate’s model.”
