The organization’s mission is to enable all young people, especially those who need them most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. Boys & Girls Clubs of Schenectady was founded in 1936, then known as the Schenectady Boys Club, and is part of Boys & Girls Clubs of America, which began in 1860 with four women in Hartford, Connecticut: Mary Goodwin, Alice Goodwin, Elizabeth Hammersley, and Louisa Bushnell. It is the largest agency provider of services to youth who need them most in Schenectady County, serving ages 6 to 18 at eighteen different sites, including four main clubhouses, afterschool program extensions, city parks, summer camps, and an employment program.

Core program areas include sports and recreation, education, the arts, health and wellness, workforce readiness, and character and leadership, with afterschool academic support during the school year and summer programming to address summer learning loss. The Clubs operate an outcome-driven experience focused on academic success, good character and leadership, and healthy lifestyles, and they partner with more than 200 volunteers. Nearly 170 total staff are employed, and over 100,000 meals and snacks are served annually.

At the Adeline Wright Graham Clubhouse, the leadership team includes Unit Director Stephanie Lavalley, Program Director Creig Blyden, and Teen Director Bri Brown. At the Rotterdam Clubhouse, the Unit Director is Julie Rouse and the Program Director is Shaquanna Robinson. At the Northside Village Clubhouse, the Program Director is Cristian Lopez, and at the Steinmetz Clubhouse, the Program Director is Faatih Rasul.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Schenectady operates as an Open Door program, meaning children and teens may come and go as they choose, and parents are responsible for making sure their child remains at the Club when expected. Membership is required to enter and participate at all listed clubhouses, and the organization is not responsible for walking young people to bus stops. One parent testimonial describes the Club as providing a place where children are learning, interacting with peers, receiving life experiences, and building leadership skills, and states that the children in that family are more productive and better people because of the Club.
