About

Heartwood Nature Programs offers 100% outdoor immersion programs where kids take part in crafts, nature study, play, hiking, art, yoga, mindfulness practice, field games, hands-on experiments, and creative play. Activities include making a cloud in a bottle, building sundials, mapping constellations, shelter building, knot tying, orienteering skills, map reading, outdoor survival techniques, basic first aid, games, skits, storytelling, movement, music, designing sets, weaving with nature, painting with mud, and crafting self-portraits from fir cones, lichen, and leaves. Participants also use watercolors, yarn, fabric, and simple supplies for art projects, go foraging, make paint from berries, make tea from stinging nettles, learn to identify native plant species and non-native competitors, and discover animal tracks, scat, nests, and burrows while reading signs of wildlife activity.

• Schedule: Weekly summer camp sessions, with most camps running Monday–Friday and one four-day (Monday–Thursday) option; half-day and full-day options are offered, with typical drop-off between 8:45–9:30am and pick-up between 12:45–3:30pm
• Price: Camp Bigleaf $355 per week; Camp Wildwood $445 per week (Week 8 $370); Camp Heronswood $390 per week; need-based financial assistance available for qualifying families

Heartwood Nature Programs offers outdoor summer day camps for preschool to elementary-aged kids 4–11, a Huckleberries preschool and kindergarten program for ages 3–5, a Salmonberries homeschool nature enrichment program for ages 6–11, and a Wildlings homeschool class for ages 10–13 that includes nature connection, friendships, leadership skills, bushcraft, fire building, and weekly environmental education themes. The Thimbleberries program serves ages 0–3.5 with an adult, Cedar Seekers is for ages 3–7 with an adult and includes a morning circle, a short mindfulness and yoga practice, and a hike, and stewardship projects are open to all ages. Holiday Break Camps are offered for ages 6–11 during mid-winter and spring breaks, and there is an after-school Wednesday class for K–3rd grade that is 100% outside.

Camp Bigleaf, Camp Wildwood, and Camp Heronswood run in weekly sessions, with one four-day (Monday–Thursday) week in Camp Wildwood, and Camp Heronswood includes a stewardship project as part of its summer camp programs. Campers also take part in hiking explorations, peaceful nature sit spots, free play, environmental education, bushcraft, fire building, songs, exploration, mindfulness activities, short mindfulness and yoga practice, hikes, salmon habitat restoration, sustainable farm help, community volunteer stewardship projects, nature sit-spots, and reflection. A Camper Gear Checklist is referenced for summer camp 2026, and the camp is described as very active no matter what the weather.

Heartwood Nature Programs follows in the footsteps of Camp Roots Forest School, the 100% outdoor program founded by April, with principles of mindfulness, stewardship, and connection. Former Camp Roots teachers Tess and Erin opened Heartwood Nature Programs after April closed Camp Roots Forest School in the spring of 2020. Heartwood is a locally run and operated 501c3 nonprofit organization composed of outdoor educators whose mission is to connect youth and families to nature while fostering community around a shared commitment to stewardship of wild spaces.

Heartwood provides outdoor enrichment classes to families of preschool, homeschool, and school-aged kids in the greater Seattle area, including the communities of Kirkland, Bothell, Kenmore, Woodinville, Lake Forest Park, Brier, Shoreline, Seattle, Redmond, Bellevue, Snohomish, Edmonds, and Montlake Terrace. Heartwood also offers 2-hour community volunteer stewardship projects, including salmon habitat restoration in Bothell and sustainable farm help in Woodinville.
