Heavy Metal Summer Experience

Heavy Metal Summer Experience is a program for students ages 15-19. Before the first day of camp, students are outfitted with a new pair of work boots and receive a new DeWALT or Milwaukee tool bag and tools to take home after the program ends. Upcoming sessions include camps in Birmingham, Phoenix, City of Industry, Commerce, Compton, Rancho Cordova, Redwood City, and Roseville.

About the provider

In 2021, Western Allied Mechanical, Hermanson Company, SMACNA-Western Washington, and SMACNA National teamed up to combat the construction industry’s labor shortage, and the Heavy Metal Summer Experience began with 28 participants in two pilot locations. The program says it exists to inspire students with real-world training showcasing career opportunities in the skilled trades and to support the continued vitality of the union construction industry. It has expanded into more high schools, technical programs, community colleges, youth organizations, and non-profits, with a focus on recruiting minorities, females, and at-risk students.

HMSE is geared toward students between the ages of 15-19, with particular commitment to recruit women, diverse candidates and students looking for alternatives to traditional college. Students should have good attendance history and general knowledge of functional math. Good candidates should also have good communication skills, work well with others, be punctual with good attendance, and demonstrate enthusiasm and willingness to learn.
