Buena Vista Children’s Services was established in May of 1997 as a sole proprietorship. It later submitted papers to the Internal Revenue Service in 2000 to become a 501c3 nonprofit corporation. The organization is a community-based, grassroots nonprofit that designs, develops, and implements model programs for children, parents, and educators, with programs that address child abuse prevention, and resource and referral.
Buena Vista Children’s Services fosters innovative programs and leadership in Northern Arizona and offers quality Pre-K education and skill building aligned with Arizona State Education Standards. It designs and implements the Buena Vista Preschool Curriculum, which is aligned with Arizona Early Learning Standards. The Clarkdale Discovery Connections Afterschool Program uses a Discovery Connection curriculum that includes homework time, activities, and dramatic play. Bright Futures is the organization’s first corporate-sponsored child care, originally offering exclusive child care for Verde Valley Medical Center employees and later opening to the public while providing discounted child care for those employees.
The organization has been awarded a 21st Century Community Learning Center grant through the Arizona Department of Education. The Arizona Department of Economic Security has awarded Buena Vista Children’s Services HRSS Grants to recruit, study, and certify child care home providers in Apache, Coconino, Gila, Navajo, and Yavapai Counties. It also created a Professional Development Program with an Occupational/Vocational Grant for child care trainings in District III, including Yavapai, Navajo, Apache, and Coconino Counties.
Buena Vista Children’s Services is supported by over 60 local and state-wide businesses. It collaborates with the Clarkdale/Jerome School District through Clarkdale Discovery Connection and with Verde Valley Medical Center through Bright Futures child care. It has an agreement with Yavapai College that allows nursing students to observe and participate in Early Childhood Education classrooms at Bright Futures and Clarkdale Discovery. Community Counts contracts with the organization to provide free parenting education classes throughout the Verde Valley and Sedona through a grant awarded by First Things First. Buena Vista Children’s Services offers monthly Early Childhood Education trainings for free as an extension of the annual “Arizona on the Move” Early Childhood Education Conference hosted at Yavapai College and invites community members and early childhood educators to use its free lending library. The City Council of Cottonwood issued a proclamation honoring the organization’s 20th anniversary, and Mayor Joens attended the event and made opening comments. The organization also celebrates its annual Children’s Celebration, a free community event for families and children that highlights collaborations to raise awareness for child abuse prevention, and it has celebrated 20 years of the Arizona On The Move Early Childhood Education Conference hosted in partnership with Yavapai College.
