St. Joseph’s Youth Camp was founded in 1949 and became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 1985. Since its start, the camp has served over 20,000 youth through its camp programs. It is a non-denominational nonprofit camp that offers both overnight and day camp programs for youth ages 6 to 17 and specializes in sleepaway and day camp programs for youth ages 7 to 17. Over 95% of the staff grew up at the camp themselves. The camp holds an annual Open House at the start of each summer for families to tour the camp. St. Joseph’s Youth Camp was formerly a Civilian Conservation Corps camp from the 1930s–1940s, and occasional painted white rocks from that time are still found lining walkways and paths. The camp offers group bus transportation for all camp programs. The mission of St. Joseph’s Youth Camp is to provide positive and impactful outdoor, traditional camp experiences for the youth of the Southwest.
Parents and campers describe specific experiences at St. Joseph’s Youth Camp. One parent shared that her 8-year-old son’s first overnight camp experience included horseback riding, kayaking, archery, and many more activities, and that he talked about wanting to be a counselor one day when he is old enough. Another parent reported that her daughter has attended for about seven years, looks forward to summer so she can go to camp, and enjoys the activities, meeting new friends, and learning new skills. A third parent stated that this was their family’s third year sending their kids, that both children come home with big smiles and new friends, and that the kids talk about wanting to be counselors when they are too old to be campers. Another parent said her daughter “just glows” when she talks about her time at camp and is already planning for next summer. A Counselor-in-Training described having an amazing CIT experience, meeting amazing people, and feeling excited to share a similar experience with future campers. One camper specifically mentioned having a lot of fun horseback riding.
