About
Gracie Barra Cloverdale Kids’ Jiu-Jitsu After School Program includes martial arts training and Jiu-Jitsu classes that focus on strength and conditioning, core Jiu-Jitsu movements, and fundamental Jiu-Jitsu techniques. Children in the program take part in GB self-defense or GB self-defence, fun Jiu-Jitsu games, and an introduction to or incorporation of Jiu-Jitsu sparring. Students in the after-school program can complete their homework while waiting for their Jiu-Jitsu class to begin.
• Ages: 3–14 years old
• Schedule: Weekday class options in the afternoon and early evening, with different time blocks for ages 3–6, 7–9, 10–14, and an adults program later in the evening; no Saturday or Sunday afternoon/evening classes
Experienced instructors lead the Jiu-Jitsu classes at Gracie Barra Cloverdale Kids’ Jiu-Jitsu After School Program. The academy provides equipment, classes, and trainers necessary to guide participants through their health and exercise journey, using top-notch facilities. The program offers a 1-week free trial and shuttle buses where GB staff can pick students up from school and bring them to the academy, where they can wait and complete homework before class.
According to the mission statement from Master Carlos Gracie Jr., the program seeks to train body, mind, and spirit through the highest level of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instruction and views the art as a vehicle for individual development and the strengthening of the family spirit, going beyond a winning-losing or contest philosophy. The program is described as the most non-violent method of self-defense and includes elements that prevent bullying, help kids develop self-confidence, support new friendships and socializing, encourage a healthy lifestyle in a fun environment, and develop respect and discipline. The class routine is consistently similar so students know what to expect during each part of practice, while techniques may change, and over four months students learn more than 100 technique combinations and are described as being physically exhausted but mentally exhilarated by the end of class. The program is described as an excellent activity to keep children occupied and as ideal for busy parents who want their children to remain active during their free time, and it invites families to join the community and become the best version of themselves.
Parent and student testimonials describe the environment as positive, respectful, fun, and safe, with small class sizes and friendly, helpful students who are also learning. Reviews highlight great coaching, excellent BJJ culture, helpful and friendly members, and a welcoming atmosphere for beginners and all skill levels. Specific comments mention great classmates and professors, a super friendly and competitive gym, and note that Coach Ethan is described as great with kids.
