NBC Basketball Camps at Pacific Union College is part of NBC Camps, which is celebrating 55 years of camp excellence. NBC stands for “Nothing Beats Commitment,” and the NBC Camps motto is “better players, better people,” with a stated focus on gratitude, confidence, goals, self-discipline, mental toughness, building stronger families and friendships, and developing a strong personal faith. Servant leadership is described as being at the core of NBC Camps, with coaches trained to serve others, be intentionally engaged with each camper, and operate as professionals, and NBC states that each camper is considered vitally important, valued, and having incredible potential. NBC Camps describes its approach as teaching players to play with intensity, grit, resilience, focus, intelligence, joy, and gratitude, and asks coaches and campers to provide energy, enthusiasm, and encouragement to create a positive culture and learning environment.
The program notes an outstanding coaching staff chosen based on high integrity and character, with coaches of the same gender staying in the dorms for supervision and an approximate 1:10 staff-to-camper ratio. Campers are grouped by age, skill, and experience, and high school athletes are placed in teaching groups based on age, ability, and gender with expectations of a high pace focused on skill mastery, mental toughness, and leadership on and off the court. Middle school teaching focuses on accurate skills, foundational excellence, decision making, pattern recognition, and confidence building. The Complete Player Basketball Camp offers training in all aspects of the sport with emphasis on defense, ball handling, offensive moves, team movement, and understanding of the game, with 6–10 hours per day of basketball skill work, drills, games, tournaments, and leadership training, and includes a personal skill assessment with words of encouragement and ways to improve.
Overnight and extended day options are available, with a sample overnight Day Two schedule that includes wake-up at 7:00 am, breakfast at 7:30 am, ball handling at 8:30 am, a morning session with position specific drills, shooting drills, jump shot, and attacking the basket starting at 9:20 am, lunch at 12:00 pm, an afternoon session at 1:30 pm covering defense intensity drills, cuts, motion offense, and screens, dinner at 5:00 pm, a 5v5 games session at 6:30 pm, and an Evening Program at 7:45 pm with an NBC theme, leadership training, letter writing, and Intensity Stations. Extended day campers check in on the first day at 12:30 pm, stay until 9:00 pm with dinner provided, attend 9:00 am–9:00 pm on middle days with lunch and dinner provided, and 9:00 am–4:00 pm on the last day with lunch provided, and depart at 9:00 pm on typical days. Most camps have an athletic trainer on-site to help with illness or injury, and in case of an emergency, campers are transported to the nearest hospital.
Campers usually have 2 per room, share a common bathroom, and there is no air conditioning, so campers are encouraged to bring a fan. Transportation is not provided, campers are responsible for getting to and from camp on their own, and there is no supervision before or after camp hours. A camp store at some locations sells snacks, sports drinks, and NBC gear such as t-shirts and sweatshirts, and a camp bank is available at locations with a camp store so parents can deposit money for campers’ purchases.
Intensity Night is described as involving sweat, music, encouragement, and confidence building and is intended to allow campers to work harder than they have ever worked before. The Golden Ruler Award is the highest achievement at NBC Camps, with very strict criteria, and only campers ages 13–18 may try for the award; it is described as teaching campers to become a person of depth and reflection while instilling the importance of community service, discipline, and accountability. For those who want to attempt the Golden Ruler Award, campers should bring a notebook and a Bible. NBC invites athletes ages 14–18 on international tours through the NBC Travel Teams program and states that NBC Camps is one of the largest and most respected sports camps in the world, offering summer camps, fall and spring training academies, year-round clinics, and international travel teams in six countries.
Players are expected to supply their own athletic equipment, including at least one pair of well-broken-in basketball court shoes, and to bring their own ball clearly labeled with their name. NBC Camps states it is not responsible for lost or stolen items, and allergies, dietary restrictions, and medical concerns should be included on registration so campus staff and camp staff can be prepared for meals and arrival.
