About
Brighter Bites is a nonprofit program that focuses on produce distribution, nutrition education, and recipe demonstrations. The program includes in-person produce distributions, implementation of evidence-based nutrition education in the classroom, distribution of at-home nutrition education materials, and PE activities. Each week, a family leaves with two bags containing approximately 50 servings of fresh produce, and the bags and boxes weigh close to 20 pounds and contain fresh, seasonal fruits and vegetables that vary with what is in season.
• Schedule: Program is based on three seasons, with sixteen weeks during the school year and four to eight weeks during the summer.
• Price: This beautiful bounty, which costs a Brighter Bites family $0, also saves them on average $34.30 at the grocery store each week.
Brighter Bites describes its approach as a three-part formula of Produce Distribution, Nutrition Education, and Fun Food Experience, and it offers expert educational resources for kids and parents ranging from simple recipes to techniques for improving health. The program’s mission statement says that Brighter Bites delivers fresh fruits and vegetables directly into families’ hands, teaches them how to use the produce, tracks their behavior change, and makes the experience fun and free. The program states that it is rooted in the belief that if kids are given something better to munch on, they will. Brighter Bites reports that more than 150,000 bags of produce are distributed every semester, over 75,000,000 pounds of fresh produce have been delivered so far, more than 150,000 nutrition lessons, produce activities, and PE activities have been executed since 2017, and millions of at-home nutrition education materials have been distributed.
The program notes that its goal is to link the school and home environments to create a larger community around nutrition, health, and behavior change. It also states that it increases the recovery of produce from growers, distributors, and food banks and reduces food waste at the consumer level by teaching families how to use the produce, with embedded mitigation of food waste through increased recovery and education. Brighter Bites reports that this material was funded by USDA's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The founder listed for Brighter Bites is Lisa Helfman, who is quoted as saying, “By giving kids access to fresh, nutritious food and showing them how to make the most of it, we help turn healthy habits into something even better: healthy lifestyles.” The program lists locations including Bakersfield, Dallas, Greater DC Metro, Greater Philadelphia, Houston, Las Cruces, Monterey County, NYC, Phoenix, San Antonio, San Diego, and Southwest Florida.
