About

Early Childhood Music: Music Fundamentals includes creative movement, songs, improvisation, singing, piano skills, and miming. The program is taught by instructor Gloria Chuang as part of Crowden's Early Childhood Music classes, which introduce musical building blocks and elements of collaborative music making in interactive settings. Music Fundamentals uses creative movement, songs, and improvisation to teach children to respond to music with their bodies in a collaborative, social environment, and it creates an intentional learning experience rooted in early musical literacy and rhythmic movements.

Crowden has been a Berkeley institution since 1983 and serves roughly 8,000 individuals each year through music education offerings for the general public, a day school for grades K to 8, concerts and events, and community partnerships. Crowden’s coeducational day school for Kindergarten through eighth grade provides an independent K–8 education with chamber music at its core, produces over 60 public concerts each year, and children attend Crowden concerts free of charge. The mission for Early Childhood Music states that Music Fundamentals builds on a love for learning instilled with songs, play, and miming, and defines success as both the acquisition of foundational musical concepts and skills and the adoption of scholarly habits within a culture that values learning above all other endeavors.
