Step One School offers three distinct programs called Two Year Olds, Preschool, and Extended Care. The program uses play as the primary framework for learning in early childhood and emphasizes a focus on diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. Its core values include fostering learning without undue pressure, nourishing curiosity through hands-on interactions, enhancing grounding in the natural world, encouraging confidence and pride in unique strengths and abilities, teaching through varied pedagogy, supporting teachers through mentoring and collaboration, strengthening collaborative relationships with families, and examining relationships and behavior with the intent of ending bias and enhancing equitable and inclusive practices. Step One School was established in 1981 and has an over 40 year history of early education, with a history described as dynamic, thoughtful, and innovative early education that speaks to the whole child. The school’s mission is to nurture children’s love of life and learning in a community rooted in respect for self and humanity. Its community is described as vibrant and is described as giving children the healthy foundation they need to reach their full potential as learners and human beings. Applications to Step One School are accepted on a year round basis.
