The UC Berkeley Early Childhood Education Program operates as a multi-site lab school program and provides care and education to infants, toddlers, and preschoolers at five centers in Berkeley and Albany. The program researches early childhood development and offers multidisciplinary opportunities for scholars and practitioners to better understand the social, psychological, and intellectual capabilities of young children, as well as environmental conditions and educational processes that best encourage healthy development. The mission of the program states that it teaches UC Berkeley’s youngest students in a safe, nurturing, and stimulating environment that sparks curiosity and inspires a life-long love for inquiry, research, reflection, and action, and that it teaches families, students, and educators to see and unlock the unique potential of each child. The mission also states that the program serves UC Berkeley’s students, faculty, and staff so they can pursue excellence in their chosen fields, confident that their children are safe and receiving high-quality early education, and that it serves as a model for nurturing children, their families, and a healthier society.

The leadership team includes Executive Director Moises Roman; Admissions Coordinator Marina Moreida; Office Administrator Eli Cruz; Training & Research Coordinator Luvy Vanegas-Grimaud; and Site or Center Directors Daiad Aljalili, Boris Alvarado, Sasha Leveton, Laureana Medrano, and Shima Askari. The programs are open to UC Berkeley students, faculty, and staff, as well as members of the local community who are unaffiliated with UC Berkeley. One parent testimonial states that a child in the program is clearly loved, nurtured, and heard by teachers, that this care goes above and beyond what the family expected, and that children are challenged to grow and experience different things while also having chances to develop their own personal style and interests.
