About
UC Berkeley Early Childhood Education Program is a multi-site lab school program that provides care and education to infants, toddlers, and preschoolers at five centers. The program offers intentional, evidence-based education and care led by highly trained early childhood educators who collaborate with families, researchers, and other professionals in the field. It serves UC Berkeley’s youngest learners in an environment that is described as safe, nurturing, and stimulating, and that sparks curiosity.
• Ages: 0–2 years old
• Schedule: Office hours Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m.; General Information office hours Monday–Friday, 8:15 a.m.–5:15 p.m.
The program’s mission states that high-quality education and care of very young children is viewed as crucial for the development of the whole child and the future adult, and that it aligns with UC Berkeley’s commitment to access and excellence. The mission also describes teaching UC Berkeley’s youngest students in a way that inspires a life-long love for inquiry, research, reflection, and action, and supporting families, students, and educators in seeing and unlocking each child’s unique potential. The program conducts research on early childhood development and on environmental conditions and educational processes that encourage healthy development, and it offers multi-disciplinary research opportunities for scholars and practitioners. It serves UC Berkeley students, faculty, and staff so they can pursue their work knowing their children are receiving high-quality early education, and it also serves as a model for nurturing children, their families, and a healthier society.
The leadership team includes Executive Director Moises Roman; Admissions Coordinator Marina Moreida; Office Administrator Eli Cruz; Training & Research Coordinator Luvy Vanegas-Grimaud; Site Director Daiad Aljalili for the Clark Kerr Child Development Center Preschool Program and Infant & Toddler Program; Center Director Boris Alvarado for the Dwight Way Child Development Center; Site Director Sasha Leveton for the Harold E. Jones Child Study Center; Site Director Laureana Medrano for the Haste Street Child Development Center; and Site Director Shima Askari for the University Village Albany Child Development Center and University Village Albany Infant Development Center. Programs are open to UC Berkeley students, faculty, and staff, as well as members of the local community who are unaffiliated with UC Berkeley. The program aspires to become a global leader in early childhood education and research and supports UC Berkeley in its goal to become the nation’s most family-responsive campus.
One parent describes their experience by saying, “Our child is clearly loved, nurtured, and heard by his teachers, in ways that go above and beyond what we expected. We also see the children are challenged to grow and experience different things, while also having ample opportunities to develop their own personal style and interests.”
