Saken Sports Camp was founded in the summer of 1994 by Rio Saken and, starting in 1994, has become Los Angeles’ premier day and sports camp provider. The camp notes that it is celebrating its 32nd anniversary. The program includes an ongoing Camper / Counselor-In-Training program for boys and girls in grades 9–12 and a Jr. CIT Program for 7th and 8th graders.
The staff at Saken are described as respected, well-trained, and experienced teachers, coaches, athletes, and college students in the community who have a passion for teaching children. Coach Rio, the Director, is a Los Angeles native who has been teaching and coaching at the elementary and middle school levels for over 30 years and has been coaching at a local private school in Los Angeles for over 25 years. Coach Rio has led his teams in football, baseball, basketball, volleyball, track, swimming, and soccer to over 35 championship league titles, and high-level coaches lead each clinic with him.
Saken Sports Camp states that it is built on a philosophy that all children should have a phenomenal camp experience regardless of gender, age, or athletic ability. The camp focuses on building character and emphasizes playing with pride, playing with honor, and playing for fun. Its stated goal is that each camper has an unforgettable experience participating in various sports, games, and activities in a safe environment, and that campers leave with an enhanced value of sportsmanship, character, and self-confidence. The camp identifies itself as an inclusive Summer Camp and Spring Camp and as a family oriented sports camp where each camper is made to feel like coming to camp is their second home.
The program notes that core values such as honesty, respect, teamwork, self-esteem, confidence, and excellent sportsmanship are promoted daily. It offers Sports Specific programs to practice skills, build fundamentals, and improve confidence in a variety of sports, and Sports Specific Clinics and Camps geared for children in grades 2–7. The Director uses a “hands on approach,” greeting and working with children daily, and the camp states that a child does not have to be a “great athlete” to love Saken, just a kid who loves to have fun and make friends to last a lifetime.
Summer awards at Saken Sports Camp include Daily Morning “Shout-Outs” to campers in each group, Camper of the Day, Sportsperson of the Day, Camper of the Week, Camper of the Year, Sportsperson of the Year, and the Camp “Toddy Award.” The camp also notes that financial aid is available. Saken Sports Camp Inc. states that it is an independent program and is not sanctioned, conducted, supervised, or reviewed by the School. The camp also mentions its community involvement by stating, “WE LOVED supporting the El Segundo Fun Run.”
