Starting in 1994, Saken Sports Camp has operated as a sports camp provider in Los Angeles offering specialty athletic camps, clinics, and a variety of traditional camp activities, and is celebrating its 30th anniversary. Saken Sports Camp was founded in summer 1994 by Coach Rio and several of his friends who enjoyed playing sports all day. The program offers sports camps and clinics year-round for campers ages 5–17, along with an ongoing Camper/Counselor-In-Training program for boys and girls in grades 9–12 and sports-specific clinics and camps geared for children in grades 2–9.
The camp’s mission states that it is built on the philosophy that all children should have a camp experience regardless of gender, age, or athletic ability, with a focus on building character and emphasizing playing with pride, playing with honor, and playing for fun. According to its mission, the goal is for each camper to have an unforgettable experience in a safe environment and to leave with an enhanced value of sportsmanship, character, and self-confidence, and the camp identifies itself as an inclusive summer and spring camp. The program promotes core values such as honesty, respect, teamwork, self-esteem, confidence, and excellent sportsmanship on a daily basis, and notes that campers do not have to be “great athletes” to enjoy Saken.
The staff at Saken includes respected, well-trained, and experienced teachers, coaches, athletes, and college students in the community who have a passion for teaching children. The Director, Coach Rio, has been teaching and coaching at the elementary and middle school levels for over 30 years and has been coaching at a local private school in Los Angeles for over 25 years. The camp describes itself as a family-oriented sports camp where each camper is made to feel like coming to camp is their second home, and it offers one of the most comprehensive and inclusive sports programs in the city.
Summer awards at Saken Sports Camp include daily morning “Shout-Outs” to campers in each group, Camper of the Day, Sportsperson of the Day, Camper of the Week, Camper of the Year, Sportsperson of the Year, and the Camp “Toddy Award.” The program notes that Saken Sports Camp Inc. is an independent program and is not sanctioned, conducted, supervised, or reviewed by the school where it may operate, and financial aid is available. The camp offers summer, winter, and spring camps at multiple locations that are centrally located to Encino, Bel Air, Sherman Oaks, Brentwood, Westwood, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Venice, Palisades, and Tarzana.
