Coach Lisa Hemmie leads American Spirit Athletics Classes & Programs with her husband and is a USMC veteran who has been in the industry for over 31 years as a cheerleading, dance, and gymnastics participant; recreational, sideline, and all-star cheer coach; tumbling coach; gym owner; international cheer and dance judge; and guest speaker, and she has served on The Cheerleading Worlds judges panel. In 2002 she founded Michigan Xtreme Cheer, and in the fall of 2016 she and her husband temporarily relocated from Michigan to Twentynine Palms. She has been recognized multiple times as a “Who’s Who in Coaching” by American Cheerleader, and the program has received numerous awards, National Championships, All Star Cheer and Dance World Bids, and has been featured as a Top 25 Program in American Cheerleader Magazine; the gym was also voted “Best Cheer & Gymnastics” in the 2015 WDIV “Best of Detroit” competition. All classes are open to both military and civilian families.
The stated mission of American Spirit Athletics Classes & Programs is that its work is driven by the belief that adults have the responsibility, through proper guidance and leadership, to educate and inspire youth in developing qualities of citizenship, good sportsmanship, respect, accountability, teamwork, and healthy lifestyles, using youth sports and performing arts as the vehicles. The program notes that Ninjanastics classes encompass the fundamentals and coordination of gymnastics and the discipline and beginning gymnastics fundamentals using obstacle course training, and that its curriculum teaches confidence, discipline, respect, and friendship. It also states that its objective is to ensure athletes have fun learning skills in a safe and encouraging environment while teaching them courtesy, respect, and to train with dignity and good sportsmanship, and that its philosophy is to use sports to educate and prepare kids for life as they are guided through progressions to build self-confidence and motivate them to do their best while having fun.
One parent testimonial describes American Spirit Athletics as “AMAZING” and says that Coach Lisa and her team are very professional, caring, and fun, with a visible passion for the art of cheer and for building personal relationships with each cheerleader and their families, and “highly recommended.”
