Silverspot Nursery School offers a play-based curriculum that includes books, music, art, cooking, gardening, and exploration of the natural world around the children. The program focuses on developing children’s social and language skills and promotes children to be engaged, independent learners during and after preschool. The school takes its name from the Callippe Silverspot butterfly.

Silverspot Nursery School is a parent-run, non-profit cooperative preschool where each family shares in the planning and operation of the school. Under the guidance of certified preschool teachers, parents participate in the daily program on a rotating basis and have parent participation requirements that include general membership meetings, weekly classroom aide shifts, school jobs, maintenance days, co-hosting dinners for general meetings, fundraising volunteer hours, farmer’s market outreach, and an emergency sub calendar. The school’s mission is to provide a positive, safe, healthy environment in which children learn through a play-based curriculum. Silverspot Nursery School is a non-profit organization licensed by the California Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division, and is a member of the California Council of Parent Participation Nursery Schools (CCPPNS). In 2001, a group of Brisbane parents started a grassroots effort to create a non-profit cooperative preschool, and in August 2002 the Brisbane City Council granted the lease to 4 Solano Street to Silverspot Nursery School and the school was born. A close connection with parents, teachers, and the community at large is described as setting the stage for children to gain confidence, self-esteem, and social skills, and parents meet, socialize, and work with a diverse group of parents from the community while developing a network for emotional and practical support in parenting.
