These classes and workshops are described as being all about creating beauty and joy so participants can bring more beauty and joy into the world. Karen Lynn Ingalls is a professional artist and credentialed art teacher who became credentialed in California in both Art and English, has shown her artwork professionally for over 25 years, has taught art to adults for over 20 years, and taught high school before that. She leads the program and has developed a special, step-by-step question-and-answer process to help students discover what their paintings need next, along with a teaching method that simplifies everything so students do not get overwhelmed.

The program uses a supportive environment that is free of critiques and judgment, with a special, critique-free process to troubleshoot, find, and fix what is not working in a painting. In classes and workshops, they do not do critiques; feedback is given one-on-one about what the work needs. A portion of class fees goes to support the Calistoga Art Center.

Karen Lynn Ingalls has taught for Napa Valley College Community Education and has given art classes and workshops for adults and mature teens through the Calistoga Art Center, as well as private, group, and corporate art workshops. She has given demonstrations to adults and children in Napa Valley, Sonoma County, and other parts of Northern California, and a photograph of her was used by the Calistoga Chamber of Commerce and Arts Council Napa Valley to promote local art and artmaking to Napa Valley visitors. Her art and articles about it have appeared in local, regional, and national publications, she has been interviewed for podcasts, radio, and television, and one of her paintings has appeared on a billboard.

Parent and student comments about her teaching include statements that they learned more about making a real painting in three hours than in three years, that they learned about composition, value, and color, and that she can teach how to take a painting from the “green goo” stage to a “beautiful butterfly.” Other comments describe her as a favorite teacher who is encouraging and supportive, with easy-to-understand lessons about color, composition, and inspiration, and as a kind, enthusiastic, and patient teacher who meets students at whatever level they are at, gives instruction and positive feedback without negative criticism, and is recommended for novices and those with years of painting experience.
