Kip Puterbaugh’s Aviara Golf Academy opened in 1991, and Kip Puterbaugh began teaching in 1972. The academy is the longest running golf school in the Western United States and is described as the premier golf school in Southern California. The stated goal of the academy is to get students to understand their swing and what makes it work, and it states that it teaches the proven fundamentals of champions of the game, past and present.
Kip Puterbaugh heads the academy, and the Master Instructors include Wayne Searle, Ken Green, Bruce Nakamura, Bob Knee, Grant Halverson, Jason Puterbaugh, and Jamie Puterbaugh. The staff consists of seven full time Master Instructors with over 100 total years of experience teaching both adult and junior golfers. Golf Digest has placed all seven teachers in the top 59 of the state in its survey of the Top Teachers in California. The academy is one of only three schools worldwide graded by Golf Magazine at a Gold Medallion resort that has a Top 100 Teacher and a Top 25 Golf School, and Golf Magazine has chosen the academy as one of the Top Golf Schools in the country. The instructors offer the latest in technology and state that they are committed to keeping their skills at the highest level possible.
The academy uses cutting-edge swing analysis technology including Swing Catalyst, Foresight, Gears, and FlightScope, along with covered teaching stalls with high-speed cameras and audio input. It has designated chipping and putting areas exclusively for students and a private putting studio equipped with a WellPutt putting platform, JC Video, and Quintic for putting analysis. The program can customize outings for corporate events and groups of two or more, and corporate rates are available at the resort for attendees. Its slogans include “where higher education means lower scores.” and “We’re where the pros go…”.
A testimonial from Pamela Rolph describes a three day golf academy instruction with instructor Ken in November 2022 and states that her game improved more than she had expected and that she has recommended him to many members at her home club. The academy is mentioned alongside Amateurgolf.com, which devotes its website to the 99.7% of golfers who are not professionals and whose content is geared toward players who are serious about taking their game to a competitive level.
