About
Carmel Youth Center Programs take place in a 5-story community center and include the CYC Excursion Program, which brings children on adventures outside of the center. The CYC Excursion Program began in 2021 and continued in 2022, when it introduced youth members to places many of them had not been before and gave them chances to explore local areas. When families join Carmel Youth Center Programs, they become part of a group of teachers, parents, community members, and business leaders who share a belief in nurturing, educating, and encouraging kids to be responsible, civically engaged, and prepared for the future.
It all began in 1949, when Bing Crosby funded the building and establishment of the Carmel Youth Center for the city of Carmel. Over the past 75 years, what was once an empty dirt lot has become a 5-story community center. Bing Crosby funded the Center while he was living in Pebble Beach and went on to help create over two hundred private, non-profit youth centers, and Carmel Youth Center is the only one of those centers that remains. The construction of the building was completed brick by brick by members of the community, some of whom were youth at the time and later became members of the Board of Directors. Bing Crosby established a culture of giving back at the Center, and that culture continues to affect the people and children involved with the organization. As a youth development organization, Carmel Youth Center Programs provide services and leadership to meet the emerging needs of young people and their families in the community, so young people are able to acquire skills, self-confidence, and opportunities to reach their full potential, and the organization strives to meet kids where they are, take kids where they need to go, and treat everyone with respect and dignity regardless of differences and backgrounds. Community members provide scholarship funding, and 40% of the youth have used this scholarship support.
