Catalina Island Marine Institute / Catalina Sea Camp offers hands-on labs, field activities, and experiential labs and field activities in marine science and island ecology. Campers take part in hands-on marine biology activities, diving, sailing, exploring the island, and traditional summer camp activities. The program includes outdoor science school experiences and enrichment adventure summer camps that focus on STEM-based learning through these activities.

Guided Discoveries, a California educational nonprofit corporation and parent organization of Catalina Island Marine Institute and Catalina Sea Camp, has served over 1,000,000 participants since its founding in 1978. Guided Discoveries serves over 45,000 children, parents, and teachers annually through Catalina Island Marine Institute, Catalina Sea Camp, and AstroCamp’s school program and summer camp. Its stated mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of children through unique opportunities of discovery at outdoor locations that combine hands-on labs, field activities, adventure, and traditional summer camp fun, with a focus on building character, increasing knowledge, inspiring environmental stewardship, and developing life skills towards a productive and responsible future. Catalina Island Marine Institute is described as a STEM-based outdoor science school providing an outdoor education experience for 4th through 12th grade students from public and private schools.
