About
California Brazil Camp offers a full-immersion experience in Brazilian performance arts and culture, with activities that include music, dance, language, and cuisine. Participants can take part in pagode jam sessions, rodas de choro, Brazilian jazz, forró night, evening jam sessions, special evening dance classes, samba de roda, gafieira, forró, yoga, Brazilian churrasco, and hiking. The program also includes student and teacher performances at the end of each session, along with access to a camp store and on-site cafe.
• Ages: 10–18 years old
• Schedule: Two sessions, Session 1 from Aug 16–22 and Session 2 from Aug 23–29; camp starts at 6pm on the first day of each session, with an optional shuttle on the first and last days
• Price: Accommodation in a permanent tent structure is $25 per person; shuttle service is $50 round-trip and must be arranged in advance
Each year, professional performers, teachers, and passionate enthusiasts come together at California Brazil Camp, and attendees learn from world-class instructors. The main tuition covers six periods of intensive learning and fun each day, as well as three meals per day that include Brazilian favorites, plus snacks, coffee, and tea. A typical Brazilian barbecue (churrasco) is held on the final day of camp.
Accommodation is available in permanent canvas tent structures on raised wooden platforms, shared with three other campers, and campers may also bring their own tent or RV with prior notice. The camp store sells instruments, books, CDs, clothing, and other items of interest, and the on-site cafe serves espresso drinks, Guaraná, and other cold drinks. CBC will arrange a shuttle on the first day of either session from the last bus stop in Santa Rosa at the Sonoma County Airport, with two shuttles at 3pm and 5pm, and the return trip leaves at 2:30pm and 4:30pm on the last day of camp.
Pictures from California Brazil Camp are available from as far back as 2001. The leadership team includes Director Dennis Broughton and “Chaos Coordinator” Rich Rice. One camper described it as “such an incredible combination of authentic knowledge and information and an alive spirit within this whole experience,” another highlighted the “great combo of percussion, ensemble,” and a third camper noted “great music all day.”
