About

Urban Workshop Youth Programs offers hands-on activities including woodworking, welding, Arduino programming, 3D printing, electronics, CAD design, and silk-screening. The program blends STEM concepts and industrial arts, and students build projects they can take home. The program is progressive across four levels, with all students starting in Level 1 and then building on their skills in Levels 2–4.

• Ages: 10–16 years old
• Schedule: Offered year round, with 12-week semester programs in the spring and fall and 1-week programs during the summer

Urban Workshop Youth Programs is part of Urban Workshop, which was established in 2014 with a mission to empower individuals through knowledge and hands-on skills. The broader Urban Workshop facility is a premium membership-based workshop, makerspace, and advanced technical training center with areas such as a welding shop, wood shop, machine shop, CNC mills, textiles area, vinyl cutters, plastics shop, electronics lab, auto shop, co-working space, and computer lab, as well as 3D printers and laser cutters. The program is described as a traditional hands-on shop class for kids ages 10 to 16, is designed to create a pressure-free and relaxed environment, and is noted as ideal for homeschoolers and students seeking enriching extracurriculars.

Urban Workshop is an American Welding Society (AWS) Accredited Test Facility and LADBS Certified welder test facility, becoming an AWS Accredited Test Facility in 2023 and an LA City Approved Testing Agency in 2024. Additional features of the larger facility include access to advanced software such as SolidWorks, Photoshop, and Illustrator, free tours offered daily, free members-only meetups and events, a lounge area with coffee, microwave oven, refrigerator, and vending machines, and an on-site retail store. Urban Workshop also hosts regular free small business training sessions for members.

Parent feedback about Urban Workshop Youth Programs includes comments that the instruction was “incredible” and that a student who loves building and making things with her hands had “the best experience,” as shared by Amanda H. Another parent, Jack F., noted that the organization is “really organized,” that class time is “really productive,” and that there is a variety of experiences and exposure to different tools and design software. A third parent, Caleb K., shared that his son “thrived in his two semesters of UW,” learned many skills, found interests that will continue beyond his time there, and was proud of every project he brought home.
