Lake Francis Outdoor Education offers place-based learning that focuses on science standards for K–4th grade. The program takes place at Lake Francis Resort, where students can spend the night in cabins before they attend longer 4- or 5-day outdoor education programs in 5th or 6th grade. Students learn in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, with access to pristine lake waters, nearby trails, and campfires as part of the resort setting.

The program was created in response to the limited number of field trip options in Yuba County that focus on science standards for K–4th grade. Most outdoor education programs in California are tailored to 5th and 6th grade, and this program specifically addresses the lack of opportunities for younger students to gain observation skills and social skills while staying overnight in a cabin. The resort where the program is held includes deluxe cabins with complete amenities, RV spots with full hookups, and classic campsites, and it is described as family and pet-friendly. In 1915, John Martin, an entrepreneur and one of the founders of the Yuba Electric Power Company, named Lake Francis after his eldest daughter.
