About
Kids Karate at Greenfield Community League offers karate and other martial arts classes for children. The program includes instruction in martial arts skills as part of a structured kids class during the summer session.
• Ages: 4–18 years old
• Schedule: Summer session from July 6 to September, with a kids class starting July 6, 2026 at 6 p.m.
Classes are taught directly by the Chief Instructor, who was recently promoted to 7th Degree Black Belt in Osaka, Japan and holds a Shihan Japanese master teacher licence. The Chief Instructor has nearly 40 years of martial arts experience and is a former police officer, and adds a unique and realistic content of safety and application not found in any other martial arts in the city. Once registered, kids can attend unlimited classes across the city, and families can attend classes at any location.
The program’s mission states that karate helps kids improve self-esteem and attention, resist peer pressure, and approach the world with courtesy, responsibility and maturity. The mission also states that, in addition to physical skills, students are taught how to resolve conflict without aggression and how to avoid or escape dangerous situations.
The Greenfield Community League leadership team includes President Amanda Barros, Vice-President Jeff Mann, Treasurer Megan Schmidt, and Secretary Tara Wren. The program acknowledges that the neighbourhood of Greenfield is located within Treaty 6 Territory and within the Métis homelands and Métis Nation of Alberta Region 4, and recognizes the traditional territories of many First Nations, including the Nehiyaw (Cree), Denesuliné (Dene), Nakota Sioux (Stoney), Anishinabae (Saulteaux), Niitsitapi (Blackfoot), and many others whose histories, languages, and cultures continue to influence the community.
