About
Performing Groups for Youth (PGY) offers classes where students take part in singing, dancing, vocal music, and performance skills. In each class, students learn dance routines, practice performing techniques, and work on musical theater showcase numbers that combine singing, dancing, and acting. Students also work on expressing the emotions of a text through music, movement, and drama, and their rehearsals lead to on-stage performances that include dress rehearsals, costumes, props, sets, lighting, and sound.
• Ages: 4–14 years old
• Schedule: Each class meets 1–2 hours once a week for approximately 16 weeks of rehearsal, with the last week as dress rehearsal followed by shows on Friday and Saturday night; the winter semester runs from late August or early September to a performance in mid-January, and the spring semester runs from the end of January to performances in mid-May.
Performing Groups for Youth is a non-profit organization that has been active since 1978. Its mission states that it utilizes the performing arts to build self-confidence and foster personal growth, with the goal to transform a child’s life by helping them reach for the stars and build their self-confidence. PGY classes are divided by school grade into a Junior Company for preschool through 3rd grade and a Senior Company for 4th through 9th grade, with class sizes ranging from 10–14 students in the Junior Company and 12–22 students in the Senior Company. Every student is given the opportunity and is encouraged to perform a solo in each show, and the program is described as a year-long commitment that includes options such as Broadway Bound, Senior Company, Junior Company, Morning Star High School, Summer Program, and Other.
PGY includes students at all levels, from first-time performers to experienced participants who have gone on to Broadway. The program’s structure immerses students in musical theater through dynamic showcase numbers and a “lights-camera-action” performance experience. The leadership and teaching team includes Emily Bowen, who has been involved with PGY for over 20 years; Kapri Hill, who holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music, Dance, and Theater from Brigham Young University; Kira French, who has taught at PGY for over 6 years; Annie, a student at Oak Ridge High School and PGY participant for 4 years; as well as Kamee Lyons, Sierra Corbridge, and Justine Majeqski.
