About
Fly on the Wall Art School offers activities such as 3D sculpture, mask making, stop motion animation, board game design, creative zines, comic books, classical composition, and drawing. Students work on both two dimensional and three dimensional projects, and may choose to work independently on their own projects. Camp sessions are designed to give artists-in-training insight into different aspects of art, and students produce finished pieces for the once-a-year Fly on the Wall student show.

Fly on the Wall Art School has operated for twenty-eight years, since 1992, as a model designed to honor the creative spark. The program’s mission is to provide a safe and fun environment for students to learn about art, to practice art, and to discover their own unique way of expressing themselves, while teaching classic art skills in a way that protects and develops the creative voice and style of each student. Instruction is individualized while still following a structured curriculum, and there are no set age groups, so teens, pre-teens, and first graders share ideas and inspire one another.
The summer camp includes walks to Quarry Park, Surfer’s Beach, or the bluffs, and older students can continue working after eating during lunch. Students need to bring a lunch with a drink, and the school supplies a snack. In the event protocol mandate returns to Stage 1 sheltering in place, a full credit is given for future art classes or camps with no expiration date.
Fly on the Wall Art School is owned and taught by Franklin Hagarty and Ethan Hofmayer, who are carrying the torch passed on to them by Susan Carkeek, who previously fostered the artistic community. Franklin Hagarty and Ethan Hofmayer each have ten years of experience educating and mentoring youth on the coast and are artists themselves. The school has helped many former students put together polished portfolios, many former students have gained admittance to the San Francisco School of the Arts, and ninety-eight percent of Fly on the Wall graduates complete their college education, with alumni completing college in a variety of fields and most continuing to function creatively in their private lives.
