About
Waza BJJ Kids Program offers Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training for children, including both gi classes and no-gi classes. The program also includes open mat sessions where kids can practice Brazilian Jiu Jitsu techniques. Waza BJJ specializes in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, which is described as one of the fastest growing martial arts in the world.
• Ages: 4–16 years old
• Schedule: Open seven days a week for scheduled classes (both gi and no-gi) and open mat sessions
Waza BJJ opened in 2010 in the Elk Grove community of Laguna West. The kids program uses the motto “Happy, Healthy, Smart.” The name “Waza” was chosen because it means “technique” in Japanese, and “Jiu Jitsu” is described as meaning “gentle art.” The leadership team includes Derek DiManno, Chris, and John.
The mission of Waza BJJ is to provide a safe, positive, supportive, and welcoming environment for all people and to use the Jiu Jitsu lifestyle as a tool for members to become better, happier, healthier, and fulfilled human beings. The mission also states a commitment to follow the highest professional standards, support the growth of every student, guide them in achieving their goals, and nurture a community that supports one another internally and gives back to the larger community.
One testimonial from Andy B. describes Waza BJJ as a place where people are positive and encouraging, notes that “Waza” means “technique” in Japanese, and praises Derek DiManno’s instruction and ability to communicate details of leverage, distance, and timing. Another testimonial from J.V. describes Chris and John as coaches and mentors for kids, mentions the attention to detail in each lesson, the praise they give students, and the communication they maintain with families, and gives an example of a child using deep breaths and problem-solving during a challenging training situation.
