About
Waza Brazilian Jiu Jitsu offers Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training that includes both gi classes and no-gi classes. The program also includes open mat sessions, adult classes, children's classes, and women's-only classes.
• Ages: 4–18 years old
• Schedule: Open seven days a week for scheduled classes and open mat sessions
Waza Brazilian Jiu Jitsu opened in 2010 and is led by Derek DiManno. The program’s stated mission is to provide a safe, positive, supportive, and welcoming environment for all people and to use the Jiu Jitsu lifestyle as a tool for members to become better, happier, healthier, and fulfilled human beings. The mission also states that the program follows high professional standards, supports the growth of every student, and nurtures a community that supports one another and gives back to the larger community. The name “Waza” was chosen because it means “technique” in Japanese and complements “Jiu Jitsu,” which means “gentle art.” The adults program uses the motto “Through the Jiu Jitsu Lifestyle, Become a Better You,” and the kids program uses the motto “Happy, Healthy, Smart.” One testimonial describes Derek DiManno’s instruction as focused on technique, including leverage, distance, and timing, and another testimonial describes coaches Chris and John as providing detailed lessons, frequent praise for students, and ongoing communication with families.
