Break the Barriers Gymnastics is part of an organization that was incorporated as a nonprofit in October 1984, after “Gymnastics by Deby” was created in 1982 and the Barrier Breaker team was formed in 1986. The founders are Steve and Deby Hergenrader, and effective June 2019, their oldest son, Jared Hergenrader, became Chief Executive Officer. The mission of Break the Barriers is “Celebrating awareness and victories of all abilities, ethnicities, and ages through exceptional programs, outreach, and inclusion education.” The organization has a zero tolerance policy for drugs, tobacco, alcohol, threats, bullying, fighting, and physical or verbal assault. Its outreach has been named “The National Role Model for Inclusion” by the US Department of Education. Community involvement includes visits to 12 countries, work with 276 community partners, 152 schools and partners in education, 8 foreign government partnerships, and services to more than 6,300 veterans and active-duty military. Over 10,000 individuals come through the facility each week, including students from multiple school districts, inner-city outreach, and veterans.
