Fresno Tennis Academy was founded by coaches Francisco Gonzalez and Teresa Samstag-Haug, who each have over 40 years of tennis experience and partnered together to establish the academy. Francisco Gonzalez competed on the ATP Tour from 1977 to 1990, played collegiate tennis for Ohio State University from 1974–76, and has served as the Head Tennis Professional at Sierra Sport & Racquet Club since 1998. He has been a USPTA professional since 1992 and USPTR certified since 1994. Teresa Samstag-Haug taught at Real Club de Tenis Barcelona for ten years before moving to the United States in 1984, and since then has taught at multiple clubs and through private instruction, including Sierra Sport & Racquet Club as an independent contractor from 2000 to the present. Teresa is certified by the Real Federación Española de Tenis in Spain and has been USPTA-certified in the United States since 1985.

Both Francisco and Teresa are USPTA certified pros with extensive tennis experience, and Fresno Tennis Academy offers bilingual (Spanish) classes. Sierra Sport & Racquet Club, where all tennis is taught, has built a community that is interactive, social, and diverse, with a focus on total fitness and family experience, and has been voted the #1 facility in the nation by the USTA. The academy’s stated mission is to offer a full range of introductory and competitive tennis programs to fit most any new or experienced tennis player's schedule and level of commitment, and to help players reach maximum potential whether they want to improve their game, play for a school, or compete at local, state, national, or world-class levels. The program notes that tennis has benefits that go beyond fitness, including improving hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills, flexibility, and teaching lessons in sportsmanship, teamwork, discipline, and responsibility, and that adults and children can enjoy social aspects and often develop lasting friendships off the court.

Parent and player testimonials describe Francisco as having technical acumen, psychological understanding, tactical expertise, sport conditioning emphasis, and developmental knowledge, and note that one student obtained a USTA ranking and played Division I tennis at the University of Hawaii after training with him. Testimonials describe Teresa as being very involved in matches, identifying weaknesses, and helping a long-time student feel that their strokes are solid while having fun in lessons. The academy uses phrases such as “Eat. Sleep. Play Tennis. Repeat.” and “Where Players Are Made.” to describe its approach.
