Early Childhood STEAM Education is part of Drew Child Development Corporation, a nonprofit organization established as its own private nonprofit in 1987. The organization’s mission is to prepare the children of Watts-Willowbrook, Compton and South Los Angeles to succeed and thereby strengthen the community. The program is offered through six ECE centers that provide early childhood STEAM education. Related services at Drew CDC include early intervention programs for infants and toddlers who are born with developmental disabilities or are considered at-risk for developmental delays, child care services so that income is not a barrier to high quality child care for families, mental health services for children and families, and Trauma-Informed Care training for child care professionals and families. Drew CDC states that its educational, developmental, subsidy, and mental health programs work together to support families and help them access the services they need, and that it provides services and resources to help children’s families and caregivers succeed in their role. The ECE Centers are described as places where stimulating environments are created so that children can live and learn in a place where educational experiences are always within reach.
Drew CDC events support families, celebrate local heroes, and build community throughout South LA. The leadership team includes Jackie Clarke, President & CEO. Testimonials from parents and caregivers describe receiving help with essentials for their children, support during COVID when costs were high, and assistance with items like diapers, as well as support for moms who need help or someone to be there for them. Child care providers report that Drew CDC’s classes helped them understand the children in their care and also helped them deal with themselves, and that they learned how important it is to understand each child’s life by connecting with their needs. Drew CDC notes that donations allow the organization to respond to the community’s greatest needs, and that volunteering can include supporting events, participating in community outreach, or sharing talents at one of the ECE Centers.
