About

Central Coast Friday Night Lights offers youth flag football through its FNL flag football league and football training. The program uses a no-contact, 6 v 6 format with skill positions that include quarterback, wide receiver, running back, and defensive back. Each team has a maximum of 9 players on the roster, and everyone plays in 3 out of 4 quarters.

• Ages: 5–13 years old
• Schedule: Season runs from late August to December with practices starting in August, opening night in mid to late August, and playoffs and a championship in late November or early December; games are on Fridays with possible mid-week games; a separate 4-week session runs Tuesday and Thursday from 6/16–7/9
• Price: $305/PLAYER (INCLUDES JERSEY & SHORTS)

The program offers separate boys and girls divisions at all levels except Kinder, with boys and girls participating from kindergarten through 8th grade in 5 divisions based on grade. Each season includes 7–8 games plus playoffs, weather permitting, with only one practice per week and weekends free. Professional paid game officials are used, and trophies are awarded, with no team sponsor fees required. The player fee includes a jersey and shorts.

Central Coast Friday Night Lights lists Mark Broersma as Commissioner and Joe Protheroe, the all-time leading Cal Poly running back, as part of the leadership team. The league states that 50,000 kids play FNL football each year and invites families to join the 40,000 kids who play FNL Football. The organization notes that there are 22 FNL Football leagues in various locations, including multiple cities in California and Oklahoma. The program cites credentials such as “#1 YOUTH FLAG FOOTBALL LEAGUE IN CALIFORNIA!”, “FASTEST GROWING YOUTH SPORTS LEAGUE ON THE CENTRAL COAST”, and “BEST YOUTH SPORTS EXPERIENCE YOU WILL EVER HAVE.”

Central Coast Friday Night Lights uses professional paid game officials and has a rain policy in which the City of San Luis Obispo makes final decisions on whether games can be played, with schedule changes posted by 2pm on game day and an instruction to “ALWAYS ASSUME GAMES WILL BE PLAYED.” The program has a refund policy that requires written requests by October 15th for the Spring Season and June 15th for the Fall Season, after which refunds are not issued. The league also notes a parking alert that there is no parking in the SESLOC lot until after 6pm for both the south and north lot, with parking attendants on site, and mentions that its website is powered by SportsEngine’s Sports Relationship Management (SRM) software and that FNL appears on TV.
