About

Fly on the Wall Art School offers art classes, private art classes, workshops, studio art classes, and summer camps, including a summer art camp. Students work on drawing, classical composition, and learning basic fine art skills through both two dimensional projects and three dimensional projects. The program also holds occasional art shows and events displaying student artwork, and students produce finished pieces for the once-a-year Fly on the Wall student show.

• Ages: 6–18 years old
• Schedule: Office hours Tuesday–Saturday, 12 to 5PM

Fly on the Wall Art School is an art space for youth that has used a model designed to honor the creative spark for the past twenty-eight years, since 1992. Instruction is individualized within a structured curriculum, and students may choose to work independently on their own projects. The program enhances every project with an understanding of styles and techniques and promotes an appreciation of the time-honored qualities that go into making art. Artists-in-training are encouraged to recognize and trust their own uniqueness, and students are given the freedom to play and explore with every project in an environment in which they are less inclined to compare their work and more likely to embrace their own unique talents.

Fly is set up like a professional art studio with open space, natural light, and help-yourself materials for both two dimensional and three dimensional projects. Franklin Hagarty and Ethan Hofmayer are the owners and teachers carrying the torch passed on to them, and Susan Carkeek previously fostered the artistic community. Franklin Hagarty and Ethan Hofmayer each have ten years of educating and mentoring youth on the coast and are artists.

Many former students have gained admittance to the San Francisco School of the Arts, and Fly on the Wall has helped many former students put together polished portfolios. Ninety-eight percent of Fly on the Wall graduates complete their college education in a variety of fields, and most graduates continue functioning creatively in their private lives.

COVID-19 protocols at Fly on the Wall Art School include taking temperatures, wearing masks, wiping down all materials, good ventilation, and a HEPA rated air filter. Registration for Summer 2026 is open, and the Summer Camp schedule is updated with new sessions for 2023.
