About

Champions offers activities in STEM, art, and group games. Outdoor play takes place in safe, secure outdoor play spaces available at the school or program location where Champions operates. All outdoor play is supervised.

Champions operates in schools. The stated mission is that Champions is a safe, healthy place for a child to thrive. Teachers and staff undergo extensive training on health and safety practices, including pandemic-response protocols. Staff and teachers are trained in child development, early childhood education, or a related field, and they are trained in first aid and CPR. All staff complete criminal background checks.

The program follows local health department guidelines and the guidance of the schools where it operates. Wellness screening is located near the Family Communication Area on arrival, and staff provide ongoing monitoring of children’s wellness over the course of the day. If a child becomes ill while in care, families are notified and appropriate measures are taken. Families are informed of instances of contagious diseases affecting children who may have had direct exposure at the program.

Champions includes daily lessons in community building and character development, with an emphasis on fostering kindness, empathy, and fairness. Only authorized staff and families may enter sites. All sites include smoke detectors and fire extinguishers. The program has a preference not to receive requests over the phone for safety and security. Children are not released to any emergency contact younger than 18 years of age unless the individual is the legal parent or guardian. Families are asked to refrain from posting photos or videos that contain images of children other than their own on the internet.

Sites are cleaned daily with safe, non-toxic cleaning products. High-touch items and surfaces are sanitized throughout the day, and cleaning supplies are locked safely out of reach of children. Staff and students practice frequent hand washing. Most sites offer breakfast, lunch, and snacks, with menus satisfying applicable federal and state nutrition guidelines where meal service is provided. Where meal service is provided, a variety of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and calcium-rich foods are offered. Sites may restrict which food items are served and brought in to accommodate food allergies.

All children must be signed in and out on a paper-based roster and/or computer system. Only pre-approved people with photo identification may pick up a child, and written authorization must be on file before a child is released to anyone. Staff are regularly trained on safety measures related to field trips or off-site activities. Families must provide permission before a child participates in a field trip or off-site activity.

Champions has strict policies for administering medication. A doctor’s note is required for any medication for any child under the age of 2. Form completion is required to authorize administration or application of medications. Each site has an emergency evacuation plan that is tested frequently, and an emergency plan and list of procedures are posted in each classroom. A National Support Center crisis team supports each center during and after emergencies. If a center must temporarily close due to an emergency, families and staff are updated on when the center can re-open. Champions Family Support contact is available for current families, and an Ethics Support Line is hosted by a third-party hotline provider, EthicsPoint.
