Urban Scholar Academy STEM Academy offers tutoring, a Learning Lab, STEM Academy sessions, a Homework Club, distance learning, and seasonal camps, along with other after-school academic and enrichment support. The program also includes the Urban Scholar Film Academy, a weekend program that focuses on skills and knowledge for the film and television industry, and involves youth workers and volunteers in its activities.

Urban Scholar Academy STEM Academy is part of Urban Scholar Academy, which has provided year-round after-school academic and enrichment support for K–12th grade students in the Inglewood and South Los Angeles area since 2012. The organization reports having conducted over 16,000 individualized tutorial sessions since 2016, with students in the tutoring program growing 1.44 grade levels in reading and 0.89 grade level in math during the 2024–2025 school year, and reports an 118% reading growth rate and 100% math growth rate from September 2023 to May 2024. Urban Scholar Academy states that its students grow 214% faster toward mastering math and reading Common Core standards.

Urban Scholar Film Academy, supervised by Film/Television Director and college instructor Imhotep Coleman, is described as a weekend program designed to prepare high school youth for the competitive film and television industry and has engaged 65 Film Academy industry crew member volunteers since 2021. Since 2022, Urban Scholar Academy has hired 25 high school and college youth workers. The program operates in a learning facility that is the first WWE learning center in the United States.

Urban Scholar Academy’s mission is to transform the lives of urban youth through academic enrichment and community service opportunities for students in Kindergarten–12th grade. The organization is a Super Bowl LVI and WWE Community Champion nonprofit and was selected for the Super Bowl LVI Legacy “Champions Live Here” Program as one of 56 local nonprofit organizations recognized for making a transformative impact in underserved communities across the Los Angeles region.

Executive Director and Co-Founder Alexis Coleman is a certificated teacher with a B.A. in African-American Studies (2002) and an M.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction (2004) from Howard University and has an 18-year educational career. She has received multiple awards, including the 2023 WWE Community Champion Award, the 2022 Super Bowl LVI Legacy Champion Award, the 2021 and 2020 Los Angeles Clippers’ “Community Hero” Awards, the 2020 Global Giving/Red Backpack National Female Entrepreneur Award, the 2020 Faithful Central Bible Church “Most Innovative Teacher” Award, the 2019 Heah Girlfriend Network Business Entrepreneur honor, the 2011 Seventy-Fourth Street Elementary School Making a Difference Award, the 2010 John Legend’s Show Me Campaign grant, and the 2007 AEMP Spirit Teacher of the Year award. She is a member of the Community Response System of South Los Angeles (CRSSLA) and the Los Angeles African-American Women’s Public Policy Institute (LAAAWPPI).

Imhotep Coleman, who supervises the Urban Scholar Film Academy, is a Film/Television Director and college instructor, an Assistant Director and member of the Directors Guild of America (DGA), a graduate of the DGA’s Assistant Directors/Producers Training Program, and a full-time Film Production professor at West Los Angeles College with a B.A. in Radio, Television, and Film (2001) from Howard University. He was awarded the Alex Trebek Fellowship for his teaching strategies and was elected as a board member of the DGA’s Training Program in January 2023. He also serves as a dedicated advisory member for Faithful Central Bible Church’s “Rites of Passage” program and on the church’s scholarship committee.
