About

Camp Connect is a program of Promises2Kids that includes sibling visits, monthly events, and a summer camp. At camp, participants take part in activities such as horseback riding, swimming, music therapy, zip lining, ice skating, going to a museum, and attending a ball game. Each year, Camp Connect organizes a fun-filled summer camp in the mountains of Julian.

• Ages: 10–18 years old
• Schedule: Starting in 2023, Camp Connect increased sibling camp to 6-days/5-nights; previously a 4-day/3-night summer camp.

Since 2008, Camp Connect has supported brothers and sisters who are separated in the foster care system. Camp Connect is described as a public private solution created by Promises2Kids and the County of San Diego to support children in maintaining family bonds when they cannot live together. Eligibility for Promises2Kids Summer Camp is that the camper must be between the ages of 10–18 and have an open, out-of-home, foster care case in San Diego County. Starting in 2023, the second half of Summer Camp is open to all youth in care, and eligibility is not dependent on having a separated sibling. Following summer camp, Camp Connect hosts a variety of monthly activities or outings for continued sibling bonding. Camp Connect serves over 261 foster youth each year. Children not only bond with each other, but also with their adult mentors. Camp Connect ensures they have the opportunity to visit and maintain their relationship with each other.

Hundreds of San Diegans volunteer their time and energy to work Camp Connect events each year, dedicating themselves to these foster children and supporting a program that provides the best experience possible for brothers and sisters to reconnect and bond. Testimonials from foster youth and volunteers describe their experiences at Camp Connect, including a youth who shared, “This is one of the best camps I’ve been to because I get to share this with my little brother,” and another who said, “This camp reminds me that all I need is family.” A Camp Connect volunteer shared that a favorite moment was at the end of camp when the children went on stage and spoke about how they enjoyed camp and valued the time they spent with each other.
