About
SPORTS Camps offers weekend overnight camps where campers play basketball, floor hockey, soccer, volleyball, bocce, ga-ga, human foosball, frisbee golf, and flag football, and spend time swimming in a pool. Campers also take part in crafts, candle making, relaxation, hikes in the mountains and other hiking, use a climbing tower and bouldering wall, visit a nature center, and try activities such as paintball slingshots, archery, zipline, waterslide, and slip n' slide. Each camp includes social activities such as a talent show, dance, and playing a variety of sports with friends and new acquaintances.

Persons with developmental disabilities, families, friends, volunteers, coaches, and supporters are all welcome to join SPORTS Camps, and families may share a cabin with other families at Buckhorn Camp, where most cabins do not have bathrooms but bathrooms are nearby. Because the camps are held at hilly sites, a camper using a wheelchair may be limited to certain activities, though dining halls and some cabins or activities are accessible.
SPORTS Camps are run by SPORTS for Exceptional Athletes (S4EA), a San Diego-based sports program serving 1,400 athletes with developmental disabilities ages 5 through adult and offering over 20 sports in 4 sports seasons. S4EA states that its purpose is to create enhanced opportunities for people with and without disabilities to interact and form lasting bonds of friendship through shared sports and recreational activities in their community. S4EA is a volunteer-based, community-wide program and offers sports programs empowering athletes with developmental disabilities.
SPORTS for Exceptional Athletes was founded 19 years before 2026 and is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. S4EA has received Vendor Approval from Regional Center and from San Diego Regional Center for SPORTS Camps (PQ8659). The leadership team includes Executive Director Walter Jackson, Associate Director Clara Downes, and the S4EA Board of Directors for 2026–27, with President Ron Choularton, Vice President Kathy Nelson, Treasurer Skip Covell, Secretary Diana Rathbun, At-Large member Shay Thomas, Members–At–Large Nicole Alvarez, Joe Alvarez-Salas, Kelly Choularton, Isaac Hernandez, Matthew Rathbun, Mia Ryans, Corie Sonnenberg, and Chad Zoller, and Graphic Designer Mary E. Cunningham.
For safety reasons at Buckhorn Camp, campers are asked to take their temperature at home before leaving for camp, and SPORTS for Exceptional Athletes will take temperatures upon arrival and send a camper home if they arrive with a fever. For safety reasons at Pine Valley Camp, SPORTS for Exceptional Athletes will take temperatures upon arrival, and activities will be spread out more and held outdoors. Halloween SPORTS Camp includes Halloween activities such as trick-or-treat, a haunted house, and a Halloween dance.
