Located just outside of Los Angeles in Lake Hughes, California, the camp is part of the SeriousFun Children's Network founded by Paul Newman. The camp is completely free of charge, ensuring that all children can participate without financial burden.

Founded in 1999 and opened in 2004, The Painted Turtle Camp is dedicated to creating a life-changing environment for children with chronic and life-threatening illnesses. The leadership team includes April Tani, MA, CCLS as Executive Director, Allen McBroom as Chief Operating Officer, and Michelle Melendez, MSN, RN, CPNP-PC, CNS as Health Center Director. The camp is accredited by the American Camp Association and has received recognition from Charity Navigator, Candid, and Guide Star for its transparency.
