BGC Kawarthas Programs operates under the legal name Boys & Girls Clubs of Kawartha Lakes and is a registered non-profit charitable organization devoted to serving and strengthening children, youth and families throughout the City of Kawartha Lakes and Peterborough. Its mission is to provide a safe, supportive place where children and youth experience new opportunities, overcome barriers, develop positive relationships and build confidence and skills of life. BGC Kawarthas is located on the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe Mississauga in the territory covered by the Williams Treaty. The organization notes that belonging to BGC Kawarthas is often a life-changing experience, that children can build healthy, supportive relationships with caring adult role models, and that Clubs encourage healthy, respectful relationships with peers and family members. The programs are recognized as HIGH FIVE & Quality Programs, and the support of organizations like United Way enables BGC Kawarthas to assist families.
Parent and caregiver feedback includes comments such as: “Thank you to BGC Club for offering exceptional sports programming in the City of Kawartha Lakes” (R. Jardine) and “We love what BGC Club has to offer, without it we would never have been able to allow our son the opportunities to play so many sports” (M. Montegue). Another parent shared that support from organizations like United Way and BGC Club helped give their child “the opportunity to do something that is positive and life enhancing, something that he can do with his peers” (L. Kennedy). A newspaper article quoted a mother encouraging other parents “that are having problems with their children to seek out this program at BGC Clubs.” One family stated, “We thank BGC Kawarthas and all the fabulous staff from the bottom of our hearts for the difference they make in the life of our son. Your interesting and educational programs and dedication of your staff are exceptional and we feel extremely fortunate to be able to make use of them.”
