About
The CYD Kids Dance Program includes dance and fitness activities for children as part of the broader Kids Dance Program at Crenshaw Yoga and Dance. Participants take part in dance experiences connected to events such as the Winter 2025 Kid’s Dance Recital, Spring 2025 Kid’s Dance Recital, and Spring 2026 Kids Dance Recital. The program is offered within a studio that also features yoga and other movement-based classes.
The CYD Kids Dance Program is led by Artistic Director Jared “Izy” Mathis, who studied Interdisciplinary Dance at Humboldt State University and has trained and performed in Ballet, Jazz, Modern, Hip-Hop, and Musical Theatre. Jared “Izy” Mathis has interned, coached, and choreographed at local studios, performed with swing legend Chester Whitmore, received a full scholarship to the Debbie Allen Dance Academy’s Summer Intensive, and choreographed for productions including Runaways, Annie, Chicago, Frozen Jr., and Cats with ICEF Performing Arts in Los Angeles. His choreography has been showcased at the National Black Theater Festival and New York Fringe Festival, and he has performed in Los Angeles dance revues such as Carnival Choreographer’s Ball, Jete, and LA Unbound.
Jazz instructor Savanna Scott has been dancing for 16 years, has danced professionally for gigs like HorrorCon LA, and has been coaching cheer and dance at New Village Girls Academy. She teaches ballet at Le Petit Performing Arts Center, has trained in hip hop, contemporary, jazz, ballet, and pom, has taught pom classes at the C Spot LA, and is part of LA Unbound Dance Company, where she is rehearsing for four different routines for their spring show and choreographing a routine of her own. She has taught all ages from mommy and me classes to coaching college students for the Los Angeles Valley College cheer and dance team.
Hip Hop instructor Erin Flowers performed in Hairspray and Broadway Dreamin’ through the ICEF Performing Arts Program and earned a scholarship to the LACHSA Summer Arts Conservatory. She is a founding member of South Central Steppers and has performed in Choreographer’s Carnival, Jete, LA Unbound, and the Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show. Erin Flowers currently teaches dance at Marcus Garvey School with the Fernando Pullum Community Arts Center, choreographs for LA Unbound 2025, and continues to perform with South Central Steppers.
Crenshaw Yoga & Dance, which houses the CYD Kids Dance Program, was founded in August 2004 as the first yoga studio in the Crenshaw community. The studio describes itself as a space built on community, wellness, culture, and joy, and it has built a community of individuals who support each other on their life journeys. The mission of the studio is to be a unique space in the local community where people can come together to practice yoga and dance, based on founder Kar Lee Young’s goal of creating a welcoming space where people could come to heal their bodies, minds, and spirits.
Founder and owner Kar Lee Young began her career as a nurse and midwife. The leadership team also includes Studio Manager Candis Yamamoto, Front Desk Managers Erin and Riley, Artistic Director of the CYD Kid's Dance Program Jared “Izy” Mathis, Jazz instructor Savanna Scott, and Hip Hop instructor Erin Flowers. Candis remains committed to fostering a welcoming and inspiring dance community in her hometown and believes in dance as a powerful tool for expression, connection, and transformation, continuing to uplift others through movement, mentorship, and shared creative energy.
Crenshaw Yoga & Dance notes that it offers invigorating yoga and dance classes at an affordable price and that its studio space is open to public use for pop-up classes, private parties, events, filming, and workshops. The studio also states that it proudly supports independent creative businesses and identifies as a #lalegacybusiness.
