About
HomeLight Family Living Child Education Programs offers after-school tutoring, educational programs, and a summer camp that includes trips to the beach, camping, and other activities. Specialty volunteers and staff provide one-on-one tutoring, basic literacy support, computer classes, and a book club for school-aged children. Staff members stay in regular communication with parents about each child’s academic progress and monitor report cards each semester, with the goal for each child to achieve grade-level appropriate understanding.
The Midnight Mission, which runs HomeLight Family Living Child Education Programs, was founded in 1914 and is described as the oldest continuously operating human service organization in the Los Angeles region. The HomeLight Family Living Program was established in 1994, its summer camp began in 2012, and in 2014 the organization’s program for families was re-branded as HomeLight Family Living. The Family Living Program works with community partners including L.A. Works, School on Wheels, and Loyola Marymount University students. For eight consecutive years since 2015, The Midnight Mission has been recognized as a four-star charity by Charity Navigator and has the #1 rating of homeless shelters in Los Angeles, California. One visitor testimonial describes a tour of the program as powerful and notes appreciation for the energy, passion, vulnerability, openness, honesty, and time given during the presentation.
