About
Teachers Who Tutor | LA offers academic remediation and enrichment in English, math, science, and foreign languages, as well as support with reading comprehension, writing, history, and general homework assistance. The program also provides instruction for executive function and study skills, including the development of executive function strategies, and offers test preparation for standardized tests such as the ISEE, SHSAT, SSAT, AP tests, SAT, and ACT. Tutors design customized support based on each student’s strengths and challenges and share weekly progress reports with parents.

Teachers Who Tutor | LA is composed entirely of professional educators with master’s degrees who teach at independent, public, and charter schools in Los Angeles, and all tutors have many years of classroom teaching experience. The organization was founded over a decade ago in New York City and is co-directed by Abby Freireich and Brian Platzer, who also serve as teachers and tutors. Tutors are extensively interviewed, teach sample lessons, and undergo reference and background checks before being hired, and each tutor receives a higher percentage of charges than tutors at other tutoring organizations in Los Angeles. The team works with students from kindergarten through senior year across a wide range of learning profiles and collaborates with classroom teachers and parents as part of the child’s support team.
Abby Freireich and Brian Platzer are the authors of the book Taking the Stress Out of Homework, and their articles and interviews have appeared in The Atlantic, The New York Times, Good Morning America, NPR, CNN, CBS, and the CBC, among other education-focused outlets. Parent feedback includes reports of support with writing and test preparation, chemistry, executive function coaching, and combined help in reading and math, as reflected in testimonials from families of elementary, middle, and high school students.
