The Silver Lake Kitchen Cooking Academy offers after school classes, summer camp, Monday Drop In Cooking, A Night In The Kitchen, Adult Classes, Private Lessons, and The Vita Gang Mysteries classes. The program includes activities that focus on essential cooking and baking skills and hands-on techniques, with no pressure to eat anything and an emphasis on process and exploration in a relaxed, supportive environment.
• Ages: 4–14 years old
• Schedule: Classes for children ages 8–14 are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays; the program is open Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, and registration for Summer Camp starts March 16th at 9:00 am.
Founded in 2005, The Silver Lake Kitchen has been providing aspiring chefs with skills and knowledge in the culinary world. The program is led by Chef Mary, founder and chef at The Silver Lake Kitchen, who is a certified chef and nutritionist with over 20 years of cooking experience. The school was launched in fall 2022 with the support of the Silver Lake, Los Feliz, and Atwater community. The mission of the after school classes is to build confidence in the kitchen by focusing on essential cooking and baking skills, hands-on techniques, safe knife handling, baking basics, and following recipes, while approaching cooking as both art and science in a setting centered on creativity, discovery, and hands-on learning. The program also connects to The Vita Gang Mysteries, Who Stole Vita D?, a culinary mystery adventure book published in 2024 that is described as helping educate children about the importance of healthy eating. One parent of a neurodivergent teen describes the staff as wonderfully patient and inclusive and shares that the last few years at King’s Roost have been formative for their child.
