About
Play Marin Basketball is part of Play Marin, which offers basketball along with other activities such as volleyball, lacrosse, track, summer camp, soccer, flag football, swimming, and additional lacrosse programs. The program is one of several team sports and activities that reach approximately 300 kids annually through Play Marin.
• Schedule: Year-long programming that keeps kids engaged throughout the school year and summer
Play Marin started in 2012 with one Marin City basketball team of nine players and now reaches over 300 kids each year through several team sports and other activities. The organization’s mission is to intentionally provide opportunities for children of diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds in Southern Marin to learn and grow together through play. Play Marin states that it aims to close the activity gap in Marin City while promoting diversity and inclusion throughout Marin County and envisions Marin as an integrated and unified community.
Play Marin partners with organizations including County Bears AAU Basketball, Dave Frommers Soccer, Good Tidings Foundation, Jennifer Azzi and Azzi Academy Camps, Marin City Community District, Next Level Flag Football, ProofLab, St Mary Star of the Sea, Southern Marin Aquatics, Southern Marin Lacrosses, Sports Basement, Trips4Kids, and Warriors Community Foundation. The organization reports that it addresses challenges such as adequate access to extracurricular and athletic opportunities in Marin City and lack of racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic diversity in the broader Marin community.
The leadership team includes Founder and CEO Paul Austin; Board Chair Bruce Edwards; Treasurer Lawrence P. Bancroft; and Secretary Roxie Baker. Paul Austin studied Early Childhood Education at Texas Southern University and holds a Bachelor’s in Psychology from Dominican University in San Rafael. Bruce Edwards has over 20 years of financial services experience and serves as a Family CFO for approximately 25 families. Lawrence P. Bancroft is President and CEO of Bivium Capital, was an initial member of Goldman Sachs IMD’s external manager selection team, and earned a B.S. from Cornell University’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations and an M.P.A. from Cornell University’s School of Public Affairs. Roxie Baker is a former music industry executive with two decades in recording artist management, is a Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor, and has a B.A. in Psychology from San Francisco State University and graduate studies in Health Education at JFK University.
A statement from Founder Paul Austin says, “It's important that children spread amongst the many small towns in Marin have the opportunity to learn about others, not by competing against them, but instead through the lens of playing with them.”
