About
Sacramento Splash offers programs where children investigate vernal pools, take part in Splash in the Class lessons, and join the Youth Environmental Leadership Camp (YELC). The program also runs Project AWE, Trash Talk activities, public tours, private programs, homeschool programs, and a Flower Walk.
Splash was founded in 1999 with the mission of helping children understand and value the natural world. Its elementary curriculum, first created in 2000, has been updated and refined repeatedly over the past two decades and includes water pollution prevention-focused curricula with a focus on Stormwater Pollution Prevention. Sacramento Splash is described as the region’s resource for environmental outreach and education, with access to and education about the Mather Field vernal pools and a culminating field trip to the Splash Science Center in Mather as part of its offerings.
The organization’s leadership includes CEO Mackenzie Wieser and founder Eva Butler, who is a biologist and advocate for the natural world. Sacramento Splash has partnered with municipalities for 26 years to provide community outreach on the importance of Stormwater Pollution Prevention. It participates in CalSOL, the California Statewide Outdoor Movement, and in the California Environmental Literacy Initiative (CAELI), and its CEO serves as Co-Chair of the CAELI Community Based Partnership Hub Innovation Hub and is part of the CAELI Executive Committee. Splash has become a sub-grantee of CalSOL to help build collaborative efforts among many Northern California and Reno organizations and has been asked to join the new Community Based Partnership Hub created by CAELI.
Parent, teacher, and student testimonials describe the field trips and presentations as well organized, engaging, and informative, with specific praise for hands-on activities like trash sorting and learning about stream habitats and vernal pools. One parent notes that their child began talking at home about climate change, plastic bottle use, and fundraising for tree planting after attending, and a student describes Youth Environmental Leadership Camp as the best camp they have been to and a life-long experience.
