About
Sacramento Splash offers specific programs such as Investigating vernal pool field trips, Splash in the Class presentations, Project AWE, Youth Environmental Leadership Camp, Trash Talk presentations, Public Tours, and Private Programs. The program includes outdoor classroom experiences like investigating vernal pools at the Mather Field vernal pools and a culminating field trip to the Splash Science Center in Mather.
Splash’s stated mission is “Helping children understand and value our natural world.” Splash was founded in 1999 by Eva Butler, a biologist and advocate for the natural world, and Mackenzie Wieser is the organization’s CEO. Splash describes its staff as a small group of nature-lovers, scientists, and educators, and it identifies itself as a regional resource for environmental outreach and education with a focus on water pollution prevention-focused curricula and creating the next generation of nature stewards. For 26 years, Splash has partnered with municipalities to provide community outreach on the importance of Stormwater Pollution Prevention and connects students to water resources and local habitats. Splash partners with two California statewide initiatives, CalSOL (California Statewide Outdoor Movement) and the California Environmental Literacy Initiative (CAELI), led by Ten Strands, and participates in CalSOL as a sub-grantee and in CAELI’s Community Based Partnership Hub. The Mather Field vernal pools, where Splash runs some activities, constitute over ten percent of all the vernal pools left within the Sacramento County Urban Services Boundary and are protected in the Illa Collin Conservation Preserve. Testimonials from teachers, students, and parents describe organized field trips, engaging presenters, activities such as trash sorting with “recycle, reuse, reduce, rot,” and student reactions to learning about vernal pools, stream habitats, climate change, and nature-related careers.
