Bay Area Tutoring Association was founded in May 2013 by Christopher T. Norwood as a 501(c)3 non-profit charitable organization. Its mission focuses on a network of education professionals, tutors, parents, volunteers, community members, grass roots organizations, business leaders, and corporate retirees who donate time, talent, and treasure to the future academic success of Bay Area homeless, foster, at-risk, and justice engaged youth. The organization is comprised of this growing network and works with partnering organizations, municipalities, donors, foundations, and associations connected to San Francisco Bay Area public, private, and charter school systems. Tutors are college students, recent college graduates, college professors, teachers, corporate professionals, and retirees from various fields of industry, and each tutor receives tutor training, leadership skill development opportunities, and pathways into part-time and full-time careers in the tutoring industry and school systems. The organization trains tutors to tutor English, math, executive functioning, test prep, and college readiness, and many tutors become employees in school districts and with partnering organizations. Bay Area Tutoring Association creates intervention, enrichment, and college readiness tutoring programs and services that occur online and in person, during the school day, after school, and evenings, and it fundraises to expand math, literacy, and college readiness academic tutoring programs, provide tutoring scholarships, grow infrastructure and its volunteer base, and purchase back to school supplies. The organization has received a 2023 top rated awards badge for non-profit, a Guidestar Gold Seal of Transparency 2026, and is recognized by Charity Navigator.
