LoveSetMatch was founded in 2010 as a private tennis academy and transitioned into a non-profit National Tennis and Learning organization and nonprofit community-based organization in 2019. The organization is led by Phillip Kim (Coach PK), along with Coach PK and his team. Its mission is to train underserved kids and adults into healthy individuals through free and donation based tennis lessons, physical education, and fun after-school programs throughout Los Angeles County.
LoveSetMatch is an official USTA Foundation National Junior Tennis & Learning Program (NJTL) and is described as a nationally recognized organization dedicated to youth development. It has received the Silver Transparency Candid Award from Guidestar for financial transparency and has a profile on Charity Navigator for a full report. The program offers a pathway for kids in the San Gabriel Valley to learn tennis at all grade levels from elementary through high school and maintains an email mailing list of more than 1,700 community players.
LoveSetMatch focuses on underserved kids and adults, offers free and donation-based tennis lessons, and lowers the entry point to learn and play tennis. Its S.T.E.M.-based tennis and fitness education combines tennis and fitness with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, and it also offers game-based tennis, golf, yoga, and fitness education. The program states that 50% of profits are dedicated to keeping programs financially accessible, and profits from each lesson are donated to create free or donation-based tennis classes. It also supports promising young athletes through scholarships to advance their professional tennis careers and focuses on creating healthy lifelong friendships and promoting positive mental health.
LoveSetMatch partners with the County of Los Angeles to host free tennis classes, partners with schools and parks, and runs after-school programs in public, private, and home schools. It provides programming for LA County Parks and Recreation initiatives such as Parks After Dark and Girls Empowerment, partners with local public schools, and is a National Junior Tennis & Learning partner and a “Core and Community Partner” with LA County Parks and Recreation. The organization works with sponsors and financial partners, and states that donations and services are reinvested in communities in need of support, and that it has expanded to serve the community and enhance the local tennis community through events, special clinics, and free community gatherings.
Testimonials describe LoveSetMatch as putting the community first and making tennis accessible and enjoyable for everyone, and note the growth of the program and its passion for tennis, according to Esther Hendershott, Director of Community Tennis, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, United States Tennis Association | Southern California. LA County Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell, Second District, states that the county is proud to recognize the work of organizations like LoveSetMatch that are expanding access to sports for youth and looks forward to continuing the partnership to offer free tennis lessons. Steve Hernandez, Head Coach at Duarte High School, describes Coach PK and his team as having passion, drive, and a love for the sport, and says that watching Coach PK teach his kids is a work of art and that he makes it fun and explains things in a way that makes learning easy and exciting.
